Sip a drink on the riverside terrace at dusk.
A drink in the river breeze
The Kamo flows through central Kyoto north to south. Along the western bank between Sanjō and Shijō, restaurants and bars set up yuka — open-air platforms over the river — every summer from May through September. Today's yuka are permanent steel platforms cantilevered over the water.
Bars at dusk
In recent years, cocktail bars have joined the older ryōtei in setting up yuka. Creative cocktails using Kyoto-distilled gin and seasonal fruit are introduced on each shop's website and social media.
When to come
- 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.: golden hour, the sky turns. Best for photos
- 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.: cooler, with lights from the opposite bank reflected on the water
- Even past 9 p.m. in midsummer it's 26–28 °C. A light layer is wise
Practical notes
Many yuka spots note that booking is recommended, per their public information. Rain handling varies by shop — check each shop's latest updates before you go.
Getting there
A 3-minute walk from Sanjō or Gion-Shijō stations on the Keihan line. The Kawaramachi-Sanjō intersection is a good starting point.
