Kyoto's home cooking, from lunchtime
Obanzai is everyday cooking handed down in Kyoto homes — vegetable-centered dishes with deep dashi flavors, served as small bowls. Around the Kyoto Imperial Palace, several spots serve obanzai from morning or lunchtime. This article picks two.
Obanzai from breakfast hours
Kyo-Saimi-no-Mura's Karasuma main shop is one of the rare obanzai spots open from 7 a.m. Five minutes' walk from Karasuma-Oike station, it works as a pre-sightseeing breakfast or a casual lunch. The format is self-serve from more than ten obanzai dishes, with a choice of white or mixed-grain rice.
A quiet table south of Gosho
Obanzai Emaru is a small, home-style restaurant in the Karasuma-Marutamachi area, south of Gosho. Rice plays the lead, paired with obanzai built around vegetables from Ohara and Fushimi. A calm atmosphere where you can taste an everyday Kyoto meal — both lunch sets and evening service available.
What's on the obanzai table
- Stocked dishes: hijiki ni, okara no taitan, kiriboshi daikon
- Seasonal: bamboo shoots in spring, eggplant dengaku in summer, mushrooms in autumn, simmered daikon in winter
- Kyoto classics: chirimen sansho, kamo nasu, Kujō scallion in egg
